I wanted to take a moment to talk about privilege.
My husband and I are both lucky to come from stable middle class families who expected us and supported us in going to college. We wouldn’t be where we are today without them, and for that we are extremely grateful. We both worked our butts off in school to get engineering degrees, and were fortunate to find high paying jobs straight out of college. We are privileged to have so far never had to worry about money in our adult lives. Hopefully we never will have to. I think if I had gone through a period where money was a concern, I would probably have a much different perspective on working. I would have more gratitude for the job I have. I try to remind myself of this, but I think it’s just not the same unless you’ve lived through that kind of stress.
Being frugal by choice is a privilege, as is being able to have a goal of financial independence.
